Checking up on the thermostat this summer

It’s time that we finally just came to grips with the heat and humidity around here.

When we first moved to the south, we were stunned by just how insanely hot it can get during the summer months.

From June through September, you don’t want to be too far from the air conditioning. But of course, my wife and I just took that idea way too far. Sure, it’s important to have HVAC cooling as without it, the summer would be near impossible to manage. At the same time, it’s also really important to get a handle on the HVAC cooling as well. We spent so much money on air conditioning over the last couple of summers that it’s really sort of embarrassing. So this year, we decided that we’d get some control over the cost of HVAC cooling. While we sealed up the house really well by replacing weather stripping and sealing all the gaps, there was more to it than a tight house. We put up some solar drapes in the parts of the house where the direct sunlight heating is the worst. That made a big difference. But truly, it was a combination of acclimating to the heat and thermostat discipline that we think will do the trick. This spring, we held off on just going right for the HVAC cooling. Instead, we waited until it was really up in the 90’s before we kicked it on during the day. Now, we just have to stick to our thermostat discipline and grab a fan instead of cranking the HVAC cooling when it gets warm during the peak heating hours of the day.
