The central heating idea died a year ago… Before that, it was functional for around more than eight years until the local heating contractor told us to start thinking about new heating when he came for the regular routine oil furnace maintenance visit, then my spouse Max asked him what he would request us to save for because we’d lost touch with new developments in the heating industry, & the Heating & A/C expert told us we’d find better help with indoor comfort if my pal and I bought a heat pump.

It’s been over a year of comfort & ease because we’ve not had a hitch in whole-apartment heating, even on the coldest of afternoons. Max has found delight in clearing debris & snow away from the outdoor section of the oil furnace as I handle all of the gardening work, so Max and I are cheerful about our replacement.

When my kids got to high school recently, I told them to explore every opportunity that comes their way. I also push them all to have at least one hobby outside of their school work. This isn’t just for their mental health, but also to see if they have any latent skills that can be nourished and turned into a possible life path. My brother learned in high school that he loved working with machines and motors, but wasn’t particularly enthralled with cars. Going to trade school was life changing because he took a class on heating and cooling systems and was immediately hooked. My brother has been in the HVAC industry for 25 years now and isn’t showing any signs of quitting. He earns a healthy salary and feels fulfilled everyday with what he does for his employers and clients.

It took me too much time to find a good auto mechanic after years of bad experiences at every single one I tried.

My most recent mechanic sold me “new” brakes that ended up being used. I wondered why they were getting worn after a year’s worth of light driving and that’s when someone looked under the hood and determined that the brakes looked like they were five or six years old at least at that point. While the exact age of the used brakes could not be determined, it was obvious to an untrained eye that they weren’t new or even lightly used when the brakes were installed. This was the last mechanic I visited because the others I’ve tried to call for services all rubbed me the wrong way for one reason or another. Sadly, I have the same exact issue with the heating and cooling companies that I have tried. Some of them charge too much money for quality work while others are charging a tiny bit for terrible services. I can’t expect much when I’m paying half the price of what’s normal for this area, nor can I expect the services to be done carefully when I’m working with these pricing tiers Thankfully I finally located a quality HVAC company that does a fantastic job of servicing and maintaining my heating and cooling system. This HVAC company also provides plumbing services to those who need it. I like having one company that handles both my plumbing and my central HVAC system. I get a discount on a maintenance contract for each category, regardless of whether or not I maintain the subscription for longer than a few months at a time.

I think that’s the first thing that always hits me whenever I have come back from overseas on a visit. As soon as I walk off the plane, I’m hit with all sorts of air conditioning. Normally, I have come home once a year to see my parents who still live down south where I was raised. And each time, I end up freezing because I don’t have access to any sort of residential HVAC where I live. It’s a developing country where the climate is so hot and humid. Shoot, there’s really not any commercial HVAC to speak of either. I think one of the government building I work inside has a swamp cooler. That’s an evaporative cooler that helps lower the temperature a bit. But it does nothing when it comes to humidity balance. The residential HVAC in this country takes care of both cooling the house down and balancing the humidity level in the house. I guess this is something that I’m going to have to embrace now that I’m back in this country for good. I spent 25 years abroad and now, I’m going to be in the states until I retire. So that means having a house. This will be the first time for me as a homeowner. I found a place but it needs plenty of work. Since it’s in my price range, I’m going for it. The first thing I’m doing is meeting with the HVAC contractor to decide on the new residential HVAC. I’m leaning toward going with the ductless heat pumps. I like their efficiency and the fact that I can set them separately. This is going to be a real change for me but I think I’m up to it.

I just absolutely love it when I can actually do something to perhaps mitigate a problem. And having to satisfy plenty of people when it comes to the heating and cooling in this house was a problem. I looked into getting zone controlled HVAC. But after inquiring about the cost through the HVAC company, I wasn’t going there. Zone controlled HVAC would be really nice. But I think maybe we’ll wait until we have to replace the HVAC unit in a few years. For now, I just wanted some sort of solution to keep everyone’s hands off the thermostat setting. I couldn’t turn my head for a second before one or another of my family was readjusting the thermostat setting. This was not just annoying, it was costing us a big pile of money. The whole thing about keeping good thermostat discipline is that it improves the efficiency of the HVAC equipment. When people are constantly yanking that thermostat setting around, it ends up ruining everything. Going into Spring this year, I’m not doing this again. The air conditioning bills were frightful last year. Thanks to a new thermostat upgrade by the HVAC professionals, I won’t have to worry with that again. We now have a smart thermostat in our home. Soon, there will be some air conditioning demand as things begin to heat up. And soon, my family is going to realize that they are no longer able to manually adjust the thermostat setting. The smart thermostat has a lock out mode and I’m the one with the code. I tried to be reasonable and perhaps there will be some zone controlled HVAC in the future. But right now, I’m going to steady our air conditioning costs with that smart thermostat.

I honestly can’t believe that I walked into this deal for my first home.

Prior to the pandemic, I was just on the cusp of having enough to finally get out of apartment life and HVAC equipment that was older than I was.

I was looking forward to paying a mortgage and not just writing a rent check. The idea of having the privacy of my own home was also wonderful. I’d shared the central air conditioning of my parent’s home. Then I shared the radiant heating inside a dorm room for four years. And finally, I shared floor, ceiling and walls with neighbors in my apartment. So getting my own place was thrilling to think about and it was oh so close to reality. Then the pandemic hit which was followed by an explosion in the real estate market in our area. This was so disheartening because I figured it would be years before I could crack that real estate market. But then, this house almost fell in my lap. Out of nowhere, a colleague turned me on to this place. It was part of his relatives estate and they wanted to just get rid of it as is. The price was incredible but it did come with plenty of work. The first thing I did was to get some working heating and cooling equipment. Since the ductwork was as bad off as the rest of the HVAC equipment, I went with ductless heat pumps and I’m glad that I did. These things produce great quality heating and air at a far lower cost than traditional central air conditioning thanks to awesome efficiency. I’m thrilled with the ductless heat pumps and the privacy of living in my own home.

Last summer, my kids were complaining because the air conditioning wasn’t working well.

I thought they were whining about nothing.

I had called the HVAC company, and they were going to be there in two days, unless we called and told them the air conditioning wasn’t working at all. We were sitting in the living the next day, and my son was complaining it was too hot to sit there. It was seventy-two, and the humidity was low. I looked at him and told him I remembered when we didn’t have air conditioning. He rolled his eyes and responded that I probably remembered walking ten miles to school in the snow and going uphill both ways. I walked to school, but it was less than a mile. I told him my mom and dad couldn’t afford to put air conditioning in our house. We had a coal furnace that worked really well, and that was all we had for comfort. Air conditioning was so expensive, so we had fans in every room pulling the heat out instead of blowing the heat in. He thought I was kidding, but something changed his mind. He asked how we slept. I told him it was something we were used to. We seldom had blankets over us, but the sheet helped to keep us cool. We had fans in the ceiling to pull the heat up to the ceiling and fans in the windows to pull the heat out. Dad didn’t put air conditioning into the house until the furnace died. He had a central HVAC system in the house two years after I met his dad.

Once we had central air conditioning installed, I didn’t think we needed to hang on to the old window air conditioning units.

He didn’t think this was a wise thing to do. He asked me what we were going to do if the central air conditioning didn’t work well. The central air conditioning unit had better work so well that it would feel like winter instead of summer. If it didn’t work well this summer, the HVAC company was going to pay to have it replaced. I wanted to get rid of the window air conditioning units. He told me we may need them for the upstairs bedrooms. The HVAC technician told us that since we didn’t get excellent to those two rooms, we probably would have poor air conditioning. I frowned, knowing he may be right, but I didn’t want the window air conditioning units in the windows all winter long. I knew there was insulation around them, but there was still a small draft. That was one reason we installed central air conditioning. My husband kept coming up with odd reasons to keep them, but the only reason I had was to use them in the upstairs bedrooms. He promised he would carry them upstairs, and we could store them in the closets until we needed them. As much as I hated to admit it, he was probably right. I helped him carry the air conditioning units upstairs, and we tucked them away in a closet.

Renovating this aged home has taken a easily long time, despite the fact that I have a relaxing reason for that; You see, I am not easily handy whatsoever. In fact before I purchased this arena to repair up I had no experience with carpentry, plumbing, or electrical systems. I basically purchased this aged dump with the intention of teaching myself how to repair it up. I had plenty of time, after all, so I looked at it as a long-term project, but first I fixed the roof and replaced the windows, then I put in a new sink and toilet. I have been easily anxious about our cooling system, however so far it has kept laboring. This is a real surprise to me, because the cooling system was almost 20 years aged when I moved in. Air conditioners don’t last forever, and I knew it could quit on me at any time. On the other hand, I didn’t need to worry about the heating system, because that aged gas furnace was solid.
