My cats and I have always had free reign of the house, and that has always brought me some measure of solace in times of solitude. My only complaint is that I had to put them away before the HVAC technician arrived. They were all safely tucked away in their room when he arrived, but there were actually too many of them for me to keep track of. Some of the 32 cats I counted were pregnant at the time. Despite my sister’s warnings, I decided to transform into a silly animal lady. I invited the HVAC service technician inside and showed him the location of the furnace and the air conditioner. After waiting for two minutes, I heard a scream and hurried to the cellar entrance. He was hiding out on the first step of the staircase, yelling at me to get rid of the cat. As he yelled at me, he was clearly emotional. He stated that he would contact the HVAC company and have someone come out to the house to get rid of the cats. After descending the stairs, I noticed a large number of cats swarming around his feet. It was hilarious to me because I’d never seen anyone so afraid of cats before. When I asked who was on the computer, he yelled that it was his boss. When the second HVAC technician showed up, he brought along some helpers to remove the feline residents. However, by the time everyone had assembled, a total of 102 cats and kittens had taken up residence in the house, and the boiler still needed fixing.

Three years went by while I sat around the house doing nothing but watching TV and waiting for my fiance to return, but he never did. When I finally accepted that he was gone for good, my pet hamster Percy was the only thing that kept me sane. I took Percey with me when I finally decided to leave the house, and he’s returning to school with me now. I was asked if he had any formal training, and always replied that he did. Percy may have been taught to bite, but he never actually does. I quit my job for a guy who didn’t give a damn if I lived or died, and I was eager to start enjoying life once more. The first order of business was to enroll in another Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) certification course. I was required to renew my HVAC and heating certifications. I married a jerk who thought it was unfeminine for a woman to work in the HVAC industry, and when I miscarried a year later, he thought I was even less feminine because of it. He and his secretary left the office and he never came back. Both the death of my child and the jerk had left me in mourning. I had no idea that one of my closest friends was still employed by the Heating and Air Conditioning firm. We were back to being friends within a month of both of us returning to work. He thought I was a fantastic HVAC technician and was curious about how I convinced my parents to let Percy attend my school.

Last week when the Heating and Air Conditioning technician visited the house, mom was not pleased.

After completing the maintenance on the air conditioner, he informed her that she would need a new fan blade and something else she had never heard of.

She invited me over because she knew I was right next door. She was concerned that the Heating and Air Conditioning specialist was trying to take advantage of her because of her diminished hearing. I told him that mom has trouble hearing and that I needed him to fill me in on what was going on when I got there. He pointed out the crooked fan blade and explained that it was beyond repair. He then went on to discuss the minor tweak that was required. After giving me a quote, he got mom talking. She felt the bill was inflated. She observed him conducting extensive mathematical calculations on the paperwork and wandering the house. He apologized for his blurry vision, explaining that he had left his glasses at home. He explained that he was trying to reduce my mom’s bill as much as possible. Even though she initially doubted him, Mom discovered that he had actually saved her nearly $100 after reviewing his records. I thanked him for his help and asked that he get in touch with me as soon as the AC components arrived. I gave him my business card. I told him not to take his mother seriously and that I would pay the bill. He laughed and claimed he didn’t give any of her advice any weight.

The Heating and Air Conditioning Technician was working on our air conditioner, and I was curious as to his progress. He had been gone for over an hour, and all I had seen him do when I checked on him was talk on the computer. I went outside to inquire as to whether or not he planned to spend the afternoon working on or conversing with the air conditioner unit. He directed my steps, and I found myself here. I swung my arms and duck-walked beside him to the service van. He gave me a look that would have killed most people, but I was immune to its effects. He rolled his eyes when I told him I was just following orders. The fan’s motor was broken, he said, and he showed it to me. He had connected to the HVAC firm via computer and was having a conversation with them. He was wondering if the store stocked a newer model of fan motor or if he would have to place an order. He didn’t think there would be any charge because he discovered the faulty fan motor while servicing the air conditioner unit, but luckily I had bought a maintenance and service agreement for the entire Heating and A/C system when I got the new boiler the previous year. He said the replacement modern fan motor would take a few days to arrive, but it would work wonderfully for the next decade. I felt bad for doubting that he was actually working hard and for being a smartass about it. He laughed and admitted that he probably would have followed suit.

A car I had never seen before was the one my boyfriend used to pick me up for our date. I was taken aback when he surprised me with a brand-new car without warning. When he exited, he enquired as to how I felt about it. He claimed to have bought the vehicle that very day with only five miles on the odometer. It was a nice car until he insisted I remove my shoes before getting in. He told me he didn’t want me to wear perfume in the future because it didn’t go well with the odor of new cars. I inquired if there was anything else I was unable to help with. He took one look at my car and warned me to stay away from the HVAC and radio controls at all costs. He didn’t want me to make any modifications to the cutting-edge design. I couldn’t even form a sentence. I gaped, eyes widened, and I couldn’t say a thing as I stood there. I didn’t think it was possible to turn off the radio or the heating and air conditioning. After some hesitation, I asked if he was sure I should get in his car. After taking a look around, he asked if my friend and I could use my car for the evening. My air conditioner didn’t work nearly as well as his did, and the radio sucked, but at least it was old, and I could keep using my own footwear. I told him I would never go out with him again and slammed the door, sending coffee flying all over the car and onto the Heating and A/C system buttons. He called me a downer, but I’m not a jerk.

Sweat was streaming into my eyes, and I could hardly keep a grip on the wheel. Unfortunately, the air conditioner wasn’t working, so I couldn’t start the car and wait to get back in until it had cooled down. My car was getting hotter than the tarmac temperature of 95 degrees because the air conditioning unit had broken. I contacted a nearby repair shop and asked if I could bring in my vehicle for some Heating and Air Conditioning maintenance. If I could get there in fifteen minutes, he said, he’d back the car into a bay to inspect the heater and air conditioner. Any later and he’d be leaving for the day, forcing me to wait until Monday. The car was quickly towed into the bay, but he said he would be unable to begin repairs until Monday. He promised to inspect the HVAC system, but if it required replacement components, fixing it would have to wait. I wanted him to check out both the heater and the air conditioner and let me know what was wrong with them. After waiting for ten minutes, he summoned me to the counter. He suggested replacing the HVAC system in its entirety. He asked whether I wanted to pay in full now, or whether I would prefer to set up a debit card account and pay when he brought in the new heating and air conditioning system.

He suggested that my friend and I install a new air conditioner. It would be fantastic for at least fifteen years instead of a couple of weeks, but it would cost about a thousand dollars more. He didn’t think the air conditioner would survive the summer. The unexpected cost of the service call made me sad, and I hadn’t planned ahead for the possibility that the air conditioner would break down and require maintenance. What if I can’t pay for the Heating and A/C repair? I asked. He just sat there, staring intently into my eyes. He suggested that I contact the HVAC firm directly to arrange a payment plan. He was aware that such discounts were available, but he couldn’t tell me whether they were granted because of my financial situation, my credit, or the fact that I was such a reliable customer. The loans were actually made by the proprietor of the HVAC business, not him. As soon as he left, I thanked him for the data and returned to my computer. I felt awkward about starting this discussion, but I know that was a mistake. Before leaving the driveway, the HVAC technician called his company to let them know what had happened and what I needed. There was no interest charged, and I had two years to pay for the cutting-edge air conditioner unit, but the billing secretary grilled me with questions and said she would SMS the paperwork and all I had to do was okay them.

One afternoon as I was kneeling in my living room, I heard a very loud noise coming from the basement and wondered if something was wrong. Then it dawned on me that I hadn’t invited anyone into my house or sent them to the basement. I asked my fiancé if he had let anyone into the basement by calling him in from the garage. I told him that even though he had said no, someone else had, and that person was not happy. Inside, he made his way to the cellar entrance. When he switched on the light, he saw a sobbing Heating and Air Conditioning technician snoozing on the basement floor. He expressed gratitude for our help and explained that he was unable to stand. In the neighbor’s basement, he was working on the boiler. It appears he leaned against the wall of our basement and fell through. We helped the HVAC technician upstairs after he badly injured his leg on a pipe, as we did so, I noticed a shard of metal protruding from his leg. Before he looked down, he didn’t think he needed an ambulance, but I called one anyway. My fiance was trying to keep him from falling off the chair after he passed out. The owner of the heating and air conditioning company was here in our living room when the ambulance came to take him to the hospital. I wanted him to talk to the neighbor, but he needed a full report of what happened. Their boiler, not ours, was the one he was working on. If someone had told me about this experience with the HVAC technician, I would have immediately labeled them as a liar.

The divorce was not what I was expecting.

• I knew that my wife and I were transitioning to a new chapter in life now that the kids were off to college.

But I really didn’t think that it would be the end of our marriage. Yet, that’s just how it went. We tried a separation and a year’s worth of counseling. However, last Fall, we upgraded the HVAC equipment on the family home and sold it. I was so focused on getting my work done inside the commercial HVAC of the office and getting out of the house that I sort of didn’t think about where I’d be. We made a bundle on the house and the latest in residential HVAC didn’t hurt us there. Of course, we split the proceeds down the middle and now, we’re going our own way. My wife actually moved away to another state. And I’m in the middle of really taking stock of my life. There was routine of career and family obligations for so long that I think I sort of just went with it. I came away from all of this finding the need to really just simplify my life. To that end, I bought a small, two bedroom house out in the woods. It’s so quiet there and I have enough property that I don’t have neighbors. I’m still going into the commercial HVAC of the office but I’m working more than half the time from the quality heating and air of my new place. This is the first time that I’ve used ductless heat pumps for my heating and cooling needs. This residential HVAC method is awesome and fits right in with my overall simplification plan. Ductless heat pump are just right.

• The older I get, the less the heat bothers me.

I’m not sure just exactly why that is but that seems to be the case. But it’s not like I’m disconnecting the heat pump either. It’s now May which is essentially the last call for great temperatures for like four months once June rolls around. I haven’t had the air conditioning on but a handful of times thus far this Spring. But there are days where the temperatures get up there during the peak heating hours of the day. And if I’m not inside the commercial HVAC at work, then I might pop on the air conditioning for a bit just to cool off the house a little. Soon though, the air conditioning will be on and the house will be sealed up for the Summer. I keep a good seal on the house in order to maximize the efficiency of the heat pump. Pulling the curtains during the day is also essential when it comes to reducing cooling costs. Direct sunlight heating is a big deal here in the Summer so I make sure the solar shades are down every day. But the air conditioning is going to be on all Summer because the humidity will begin to rise and combine with the heat. That can be a miserable combination. Thankfully, the heat pump is balancing the humidity and moisture level as the air conditioning is on. That’s a wonderful thing because the cooling air inside my house feels crisp and dry. And the humidity balancing also reduces the chance of mold and mildew as well.
