When we needed a new roof on our house, we knew exactly what we wanted. We had seen some roof tiles, and we had looked at metal roofs. Neither of these looked nice to me. My husband told me I was being picky, but I had seen some roofing materials I thought were nice. I just couldn’t remember what it was called. I remembered they were Shake tiles, but they made them from synthetic materials. I liked the looks of them, and I could pick different colors. I asked the roofers if they could purchase synthetic shake tiles in the deep grey, and they said they could. They were knocking on the door right before I was heading out for work. The roofer was saying they had the tiles on the truck, and wanted to know if it was okay to start on the roof when no one was home. When I got home that afternoon, the roofers were gone, but there was a problem. The synthetic Shake tiles I ordered were not what they put on the roof. They were a deep grey, but they looked like the tar paper style tiles my mom and dad had on their roof. I called the owner of the roofing company and told them they had put the wrong tiles on the roof. He said they were deep grey, and they were synthetic. I reminded him I had specifically asked for synthetic shake tiles, and not the tiles he had installed. I wanted the roofer to come to the house and remove these and put the others on the house. I knew it would be a loss for the roofer, but it wasn’t the roofing I paid for.

I couldn’t believe there was no one in our area that offered drain cleaning service. I made several inquiries to plumbing companies, and they gave me ideas on who to call, but their prices were crazy. I had a picnic planned and I could not have the picnic without having the sewer drain cleaned. My husband worried the sewage would come bubbling up through the grass and ruin the picnic. Two days before the picnic, my husband’s prediction came true. We woke to the smell of sewage coming through our open bedroom window. We could see the grass was wet, and it looked like something was bubbling up. My husband groaned because the wet grass was over the sewage tank. I don’t know who was more upset. I was about to break into tears for not following through with my search for sewer drain cleaning service. My husband was upset with me for not following through with the search. I called the local plumbing company and they suggest I called the nearest Roto Rooter drain cleaning company. The next day, my yard was dug up and they were completing the cleaning, but we had to move the picnic to the park. There was no way the smell was going to subside quickly when it was almost 90 degrees outside. My husband suggested we just cancel our picnic, but my neighbor, who was at the house, disagreed. She thought it would be okay to move the picnic next door. The smell wasn’t nearly as bad, and she loved entertaining as long as I did the cooking.

It was a hard compromise to make, but at least he’s doing better now and is slowly working his way to opening another location again if the demand continues to increase like it has in recent months. If the food service industry can slowly rebound, I hope that means that other industries hit hard from the pandemic can as well. Another example are fitness centers and gyms, as many around the country were forced to close their doors during the worst parts of the pandemic depending on which state they were in. That’s why despite there being so much inflation right now, some gyms in my area are offering discounts on gym memberships to get people in the door. It’s a relief they survived at all, but my own favorite gym and fitness center had to close its doors for over a year and somehow managed to not go out of business altogether. I typically clean out my pantry once per year.

And when I clean out the pantry, I donate all the nonperishable items to a local organization.

At times, a local charity will leave a plastic bag on my door and ask that we fill it with nonperishable goods. So, I am always giving away food because it’s the right thing to do especially if I won’t use the items right away. Well, it has been 2 years since I cleaned out my pantry, but recently, I received one of those plastic bags which forced me to pull some items out. While I was finding canned goods to place into the bags, I came across a jar of honey that I had purchased from a farmer’s market over 2 years ago. Of course, because it was a local vendor, there was no expiration date on the container. In fact, there was no label on the jar, so I wasn’t even sure what farm this honey came from. The honey still looked good, but I wasn’t sure if honey would expire after a while. So, after I packed the bag for the charity, I did a quick search to determine the expiration date of honey. Turns out, as long as honey is stored properly it will never go bad and is safe to use. However, over time, the honey will change colors or may crystallize but as long as it is in a clean air-tight glass container away from a heat source, then the honey could potentially last forever. This means that honey has no shelf life which is good to know. I would’ve hated it if I had to toss out the bottle that I found in my pantry.

I was looking for new vinyl siding for my house.

I went to several home centers until I found the siding I wanted, and I took the directions on how to install the siding.

By the time I read through the instructions, I thought I could put up the siding by myself. I bought all the siding I thought I should need and took it home. I gave no thought to where I was going to store the siding until I had time to install it, but I got such a good price that I figured I could put it on my porch. Once I found the time to install the new siding, I wasn’t so sure it was something I wanted to do on my own. I asked my brother what he thought about installing siding on my home, and he said I should contact a siding contractor. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a siding contractor. He told me to go online and put in a search for siding contractors in our area. It surprised me when I got a list of almost ten people who were certified and licensed siding contractors. I contacted three of them before I found someone who had the time to put the siding on my house within a month. I wanted to have the new siding installed before the holidays. He offered to come to the house and show me different siding samples he had, but I told him I already bought it. He groaned and said it could be difficult to match if I didn’t buy enough. I hadn’t thought about this, and I felt even more foolish and wondered how much more it was going to cost if he had to buy new siding.
