Thank goodness I have one in our truck because I did not want to drive all the way back to the office. I did not want to tackle that hill any more times than was certainly necessary. On our way up the hill after the repair was finished, I must have hit every single pothole. I thought I had a flat tire. I am ecstatic our small Ford truck made it up the hill but that is not a venue that I would undoubtedly go again after seeing the steepness of the hill.

Every quarter, the air conditioning business takes all the air conditioning experts for a team-building retreat.

Over the years, we have seen these activities build up morale and relationships among the a/c reps in the company.

As the human resource manager, I strive to make the activities as interactive, fun, and energetic as possible. More than just learning about air conditioning, we have fun sessions and a question and answer part of the program. This past quarter, the activities included rafting, archery, ziplining, and rope tagging. I divided the group into teams of different departments. For instance, we had a team that included cooling specialists, cooling products merchants, and cooling technology associates. The purpose was to create interdepartmental interaction and motivate relationship building. We got to the offices early so we could leave the office and head to the venue. On the bus, we held trivia about different cooling equipment and their pros and cons. The winning team or person won some money. I have come to learn that money is an excellent motivator. It was about a two-hour drive, so we had enough time to kill. Questions on the trivia touched on almost every topic, including air conditioning installation and the importance and process of executing air conditioner tune-up. The activities were fun. Maybe it’s because I love the outdoors. It was a hot day. Fortunately, the hotel at the venue had a well-functioning heat pump to provide quality indoor comfort. I later found out that most of the new air conditioning experts, even the more experienced ones, wanted to work with me because of my thoroughness and work ethic. We had done amazing work with my team, from creating an air conditioning installation manual to forming an apprentice program for the new trainees to learn more about air conditioning. Last week I wrapped up my previous work order, as I am leaving the company for greener pastures abroad. My team and I attended to a malfunctioned heat pump. We did a comprehensive air conditioner tune-up. It felt nostalgic changing my last air conditioning filters with my team. We all worked on the air conditioning repairs with joy and sadness. The fun that we were working together, sadness because it was our last time working together on cooling equipment. We restored the air conditioning system efficiently. Covid has changed so many people’s lives for good and evil.

However, we are all trying to get ahead healthy.

When the pandemic first hit, I had just launched my air conditioning business. I was very excited about the future. However, when Covid hit, I had to restrategize and hope to stay afloat. I remember feeling sick after considering letting several cooling specialists go. The business took a hit; we were not making good sales for about three months, and the profits were low. As much as cooling products are crucial to people’s indoor comfort, property owners were apprehensive about letting a stranger on their premises. Though we still provided services such as air conditioning installations, the requests had significantly reduced. Through it all, fortunately, I could keep the business afloat until the worst passed. None of the a/c reps that work for me got ill. They also did not lose anyone from their families. We were all grateful for that. Two years after the pandemic, I opened my company doors for fresh air conditioning experts yearning to learn more about air conditioning at our training institute. I upgraded the gear we use when on jobs such as air conditioning repairs. We still have our face masks when attending to customers offsite. Last week we replaced a broken heat pump with a new air conditioning system at a house where one of the inhabitants had Covid.
