I’ve been trying to lower my utility bill for over a year now, next to my mortgage payment, my utility bill is my second highest biweekly expense.

It’s still a bit strange to get used to something different after years of knowing only one way.

• For me, it was suddenly learning how not to live with my partner.

But that’s what seemed to be best for my partner and I. Once our kids went off to college things got awkward and our drift was pretty apparent. There was just so much silence inside the home. We did the best to stay out of each other’s path. We both stayed late at the office in order to avoid going home. Once things became intolerable we talked about it and it was such a relief. There was no blame or failure to it really. I mean, we’d been good partners, raised good youngsters but it was time to face the fact that our relationship isn’t good anymore. So we met with a realtor and then did some projects to add value to the house before listing it. We also replaced the Heating and A/C machine to the latest residential HVAC unit. This was a massive selling boost. Currently, I live in a small 2-bedroomed house and it’s a bit weird but I’m going to be okay. It’s just funny how you don’t realize how many things your partner handled over the years. For instance, everything about the Heating and A/C machine now is on me. But I am doing pretty well starting with the fact that I signed up for the Heating and A/C maintenance plan given by the HVAC company. Still, I have to keep setting reminders on my devices in order to get the HVAC air filter changed on time. But, I think I can handle that.

When dad was giving up the ghost, he wanted my sibling and I to be there to ensure that we kept the cabin in the family.

He wasn’t so distraught about anything else which was very interesting.

But he was adamant that we would never sell the place once he was gone. Honestly, I don’t know if any of us could think of ever doing that. Some of the best memories we had of dad was him whisking us out of the house to the cabin. Even without the best HVAC system, he still pulled us out there. Dad would pick us up and take us for a long weekend at the cabin right after school. So while that cabin is worth a ton of money, I know that none of us would ever have the first thought of selling it. Besides, both of our youngsters loved it just like we did up there on that property. And who wouldn’t with all that perfect nature, a lake and a unique quietness for miles. While we didn’t entertain the thought of selling the cabin, we did want to revamp it a bit. And a major one was having some other source of heating up there in the winter. The wood stove’s heating wasn’t sufficient any more. You had to get the fire going first. And that could be tricky at times. This resulted in us not going up there as much in the winter. So we had a series of ductless heat pumps installed to offer an extra heating source. Besides, having the Heating and cooling unit in the dead heat of summer time isn’t too terrible either.

Thankfully, our winter time is a mild one so our Heating and A/C specialist had given us the gift of a head start when it came to the summer.

Each fall, the Heating and A/C specialist comes out to the lakehouse to do the routine A/C heating maintenance. This is followed each Spring by the same HVAC specialist coming out to do the air conditioning tune up in the Spring. It’s always good to have the same Heating and A/C professionals looking after our HVAC equipment. And it has entirely paid off as well. This past fall, the Heating professional came to us after the regular maintenance session to let us know that our heat pump’s days were numbered. That sort of caught us by surprise. While it was clear that the Heating and A/C machine had been around a while, we hadn’t budgeted for it. We installed the Heating and A/C machine when we purchased this house. To our utter shock, that was nearly 25 years ago. So of course the Heating and A/C machine was about to wear out. But all those years of consistent Heating/AC maintenance paid off as at no point did the machine break down but rather performed its cooling and heating functions perfectly. Perhaps, this made us sleep well every day, thanks to the Heating and A/C equipment. Thankfully, our winter time is a mild one so our Heating and A/C specialist had given us the gift of a head start when it came to the summer. We were able to get the Heating and A/C corporation on board and also have enough to pay for the new heating and cooling equipment. With the early heads up, we had sufficient time to get all this accomplished before the heat and humidity of the summer time months set in. I promise you, there is no way we were going into a summer time like this without a heat pump that was ready to go.

At the end of the day, I for sure like coming to the house to see my family. No matter what sort of mood or what sort of drama is happening, I enjoy being with them each night and jump at any chance I get. But if I’m being honest, that’s not what I’m thinking about those last few hours of the work day. My thoughts turn to the heating/cooling in my home while in those hours of the day and not so much my family. That said, it’s not like I’m inside an air conditioned off at work. Nope, I’m always out all day working in the field. Now, I’m very lucky to live and work in a region where we don’t have a harsh winter. While the heat pump does help when it gets too cold, I’m not dealing with harsh snow-filled or sub zero uneven kinds of temperatures. Yet, coming to the house after being outside in a cold weather is sure nice because the smart temperature control ensures I find the perfect temperatures indoors. But honestly the Heating and cooling in the summer time is what I crave for shortly after supper. There are mornings where just being inside the truck resting is cumbersome. The little ductless heat pump seems to be insufficient. So coming to the house on those days is the best thing. It’s almost indescribable what it feels like to simply walk into a properly air conditioned space just like my house. Just don’t tell my family this because I like to have them thinking that the smile on my face is entirely all about them.

Much like the way I handle things inside the house and office, I like to find consensus in solutions.

• I’m a firm believer that having all those involved in the outcome makes the results better.

And it was this sort of strategy that I applied to my family when it came to the Heating and cooling in our home. We live in a region where the heat is the biggest deal. So I decided to involve all the participants in an effort to entirely solve the high costs of Heating & cooling we’d been experiencing. I had to make saving worth everyone’s while. The first step there was giving everyone a goal that was officially effective immediately. Every year when we go on vacation, I’m always reluctant when it comes to the kids and spouse wanting to buy extras. So this year, I gave the family a deal. For all the money we saved on Heating and air conditioning, we’d use it on our family vacation at the end of summer. And like magic, the temperature control stayed right where it was supposed to be. All I had to do was program the temperature control at the beginning of summer time and it was left alone. I also stuck to my word, and kept a running tally of the savings all summer time. We blew it out on summer time vacation later that year.

And I’m more like what’s the use of having money if you don’t use it. So the fact that it took 7 years for us to get a smart temperature control is a perfect example of how resistant he can be. When the smart temperature control came out, I was intrigued. I loved the idea of the new Heating and A/C technology that I didn’t have to worry about all the time. The smart temperature control was the latest Heating and A/C technology that would allow us to sort of walk away from always managing the heating and cooling output. And that’s for sure something we both have done since we became homeowners. We are always on the same page when it comes to saving money on stuff that we don’t need to overpay. Heating and cooling costs tend to fall into that category. So we identified a way to control the digital temperature monitoring device and spent time keeping track of the A/C. But with the smart temperature control, all we had to do was let it learn our patterns, adjust and save us even more money. It was a no brainer. But of course, my partner found every reason he could to resist. Thanks to the boys playing football in the house, I now have the smart temperature control I wanted. The old digital temperature control took a direct hit from an overthrown spiral. I should have thought of that a decade ago. Regardless, once the digital temperature control was in pieces on the floor, my partner didn’t have a choice but to comply with getting the latest HVAC technology.

It’s not all that easy parenting several kids.

When we started our family, we thought we wanted the giant family with like 7 youngsters. Thankfully, we stopped at the fourth one. Even so, now that we have four kids running around, we hardly get time to just soak up the air conditioning in silence. The ironic thing about that is that both of us are quiet people. This is one of the reasons we’ve been so compatible. And actually, this is how we met. Instead of partying through school,we found our way to the library in one corner that got good air conditioning. We both had similar preferences and likes hence we ended up as partners right from the word go. So having a house full of girls of all things, is certainly an added twist to our lives. When the pandemic started, We all did pretty well when it came to respecting each other. We had to share the office that was properly ventilated for over a year. My spouse and I were working from the house and the youngsters would have online classes too. Still, I found that I needed a place to just take a breath and be alone. So I had the Heating and A/C company install a ductless heat pump inside the finished attic. It was the perfect spot where I could just slip away for some high quality heating and cooling as I enjoyed some quiet for myself. The attic and ductless Heating/ AC are still making that part of the cabin comfortable so that everyone keeps running out there when they want to relax. And man, am I ever grateful for that.

When I turned 54 years old, everything just changed.

Looking back now, I can see that there were some giant flags/ warning signals out there but still, I didn’t see what was coming at all.

I guess once the youngsters were out of the family house and off to school, I became depressed. That depression worsened when my spouse decided that she didn’t want to be married anymore. To settle things amicably, we replaced the Heating and A/C machine in that house and later sold it as part of a quite amicable divorce. And like every time that I faced hard emotional times, I threw myself into my work. It wasn’t that I was a workaholic or anything, but the HVAC job was my only solace or so I thought. That wasn’t it at all. But through all of my adult life, I could hide my worries in my work. It was just one huge coping mechanism really. Well this time, it didn’t work. One day when on the way to the HVAC offices, I’m told I collapsed and ended up hospitalized. I simply had a major breakdown to the point where I almost died. That was apparently my lowest point. But that was also the door to my most authentic self. These days, there is no way I can exceed 80 work hours in a week. I still work in the HVAC industry but I have slowed it down now. Additionally, I am starting from scratch in a tiny cabin out in the woods. On the side, I also do some consulting to keep myself happy since money isn’t a major concern since life is just so straight-forward. However, I’m grateful to have a ductless heat pump that helps with air conditioning in this cabin. And that’s about as extravagant as I get these days.
